The next Monday Andy was called into the office by Mr. Barlow. Andy went back to his enclave wondering what he could want with her. She didnât have to wait long to find out.
âIâm not very happy about Friday, Andrea.â
âIâm sorry if it was inconvenient for you, Mr. Barlow, but I did schedule it.â
âI called your house around ten. There was no answer. I seriously doubt you were sick at all. â
Andy was annoyed at this. First off, she hadnât called in sick, and secondly, even if she had it was just shitty of him to check up on her. âI wasnât sick. I was out sailing.â
âSo, you admit it. I am very disappointed.â
âI think you must have a wire crossed here. I took a VACATION day, not a sick day, and I scheduled it with your little forms, just like you want. You approved it. You were supposed to schedule someone else to cover it, though I see you didnât. So if you ended up having to get out of your office and get down on the floor for a day, that was YOUR mistake, not mine. Not that I think itâs such a bad idea for you to see what goes on once in a while. And Iâll tell you what. I resent your implication. Iâve been her five years and have NEVER missed a day of work without doing the appropriate thing. Iâve covered you more than a few times when you would call in at the spur of the moment. So next time you want to yell at me I would check your paperwork first and save yourself some embarrassment.â Andyâs voice had been getting steadily louder as she gained momentum and by the last sentence she was on her feet and in his face.
Caught by surprise by her response, and more than a little humiliated by his error, Barlow responded in kind. âDonât you DARE speak to me that way! I will have you dismissed for insubordination!â
Andy, who normally would have taken this sort of thing without comment, was livid now. âHave ME dismissed? You called me into your office to berate me for something I didnât do, for something that was an oversight on your part and now you want to dismiss me? Maybe I want to file a grievance against you. Maybe I wonder why you wanted me in your office at all. Maybe I donât like the way you are always trying to look down my shirt when you talk to me. And maybe YOU had better find someone else to pick on. Because I am done being your whipping post.â
Barlow was speechless. There were lots of employees he was afraid of, ones he would never dare speak to the way he spoke to Andy. Carlesse for one. She had made it clear from the beginning that she was not going to be bullied. But Andrea, she was always an easy mark for his anger, his frustration. And she had hit the nail on the head with her comment about staring down her shirt.
